What is RMVB?
RMVB, known as RealMedia Variable Bitrate, is a variable bitrate extension of the RealMedia multimedia container format developed by RealNetworks. The RMVB files usually contain pieces of multimedia data compressed using the proprietary RealMedia compression algorithm. RMVB has widely been used for file sharing by P2P programs, such as Emule, BitTorrent and Gnutella. The RMVB files are also optimized to allow streaming over the Web. The RMVB files may be opened using the Media Player Classic, Real Alternative, or RealPlayer codec set. RealMedia codec uses compression similar to MPEG-4 Part 10 codecs, such as X264.
What is AVI?
AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave. This is a container video format that specifies certain structure how the audio and video streams should be stored within the file. AVI itself doesn’t specify how it should be encoded (just like the streaming format ASF), so the audio/video can be stored in very various ways. Most commonly used video codecs that use AVI structure are M-JPEG and DivX. AVI contains code called FourCC which tells what codec it is encoded with.
